Why only love Jesus and not the Father and Mother too?

Listening to a talk show the other day, a caller made this remark about the above bumper sticker: “I don’t see why some Christians only love Jesus and not the Father and Mother too.”

Answer:

  1. Loving Jesus is loving the Father.

John 14:9-11  Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father ; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?  10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.  11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.”

2.  Scripture does not speak of “the Mother.”  I guess they were speaking of Mary the mother of Jesus.  But she is not God, not part of the Trinity, and there is no biblical reason to make Mary into something she is not.

Why doesn’t God materialize and openly reveal Himself?

He did so: Jesus Christ.

But what about God materializing to every person individually?

Luke 16:27-31  And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

  1. God does not need to.  Do people reject all other well known historical figures because they have not personally materialized to them?  Where’s the consistency?
  2. God is not required to.  He has given enough light (Moses, the Prophets, and Jesus).
  3. It may not matter.  Even if God materialized to everyone, that does not mean all would repent.

James 2:19  “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!”

Luke 13:3  [Jesus] “No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

God is Love

People often envoke God’s love because love is merciful and most of us know we need a great deal of mercy for God to forgive us of our sins.  But at the same time people will often reject portions of the Bible that are critical of their lifestyle.  But without a trustworthy source of information regarding God, such as the Bible, we do not know if God is indeed loving.  To reject portions of the Bible because we don’t like them does not make them false or any less God’s Word.  To reject certain parts of the Bible this way is to undermind all of it, including God’s love.
