According to the once saved – aways saved / eternal security doctrine, isn’ t this a license to sin?
The question is, “Who is saved?”
Luke 13:3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
No repentance, no salvation.
Matthew 7:21 Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
What’s the Father’s will according to Christian doctrine? Two are:
- The Greatest Commandment, Matthew 22:37 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.
- John 14:15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
It’s similar to personal relationships. People who intentionally hurt you and don’t care don’t love you. The point of Christianity is to love God. No love – no repentance – no obedience – no salvation.
From a biblical perspective:
James 2:19 “You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.”
Matthew 7:21-23 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
